How to Install a Side-Mounted Horn Cover on Your Harley-Davidson

Before You Begin

Tools Required

  • T27 or T25 Torx screwdriver or bit (verify for your model year)
  • Torque wrench (inch-pounds capable)
  • Optional: Loctite threadlocker

Step-by-Step Installation

Step 1 – Power Down the Motorcycle

Turn the ignition to OFF and remove the key before starting. If equipped with a keyless fob, move it away from the vehicle. Park on a flat, stable surface with the kickstand fully extended.

Step 2 – Locate the Horn

The side-mounted horn is typically located on the lower left side of the frame, near the front of the bike. It's a round disc secured by a single center bolt or Torx screw. Refer to your service manual if you're unsure of the exact location on your model.

Step 3 – Remove the OEM Horn Cover or Horn Mounting Hardware

Using your Torx bit, remove the center screw securing the factory horn or horn cover. Keep the screw — you may reuse it depending on your kit's hardware. Set the factory cover aside.

Step 4 – Position the New Horn Cover

Hold the Brock Black Designs horn cover up to the horn and align the center mounting hole. Make sure the design is oriented the way you want it — most riders prefer the artwork facing outward and slightly forward for maximum visibility from the side.

Check that the cover sits flush against the horn body with no gaps around the edges before tightening.

Step 5 – Secure the Cover

Thread the mounting screw through the horn cover and into the horn. Hand-tighten first to confirm alignment, then snug down with your Torx driver.

  • If your kit includes a new screw, use it. If reusing the OEM screw, a small dab of Loctite is recommended to prevent vibration from backing it out.
  • Do not overtighten — the cover is designed to be snug, not cranked down. Overtightening can crack the cover or strip the horn threads.

Step 6 – Final Check

Give the cover a gentle tug to confirm it's secure. Check that it's flush and the design is oriented correctly. Wipe off any fingerprints with a microfiber cloth. You're done!

Tips for a Perfect Install

  • Watch the install video at the top of this page before starting — seeing the process once makes the steps much clearer.
  • Check fitment and orientation before tightening — it's much easier to adjust before the screw is snugged down.
  • A dab of Loctite on the screw threads is good insurance against road vibration loosening the cover over time.
  • After your first long ride, give the cover a quick check to make sure it's still tight.
