How to Install a Harley-Davidson Coil Cover (2018+)

A custom coil cover is one of the quickest, most affordable ways to add personality to your Harley-Davidson's engine bay. The install takes under 10 minutes with basic tools, and the result is a clean, finished look that covers the stock coil with your own style. Here's exactly how to do it right.

Before You Begin

Inspect the kit to confirm all parts are present and undamaged:

  • Kit 57300214 includes: Screw, black (Part No. 10200730) and coil cover

Fitment / Compatibility

Tools Required

  • Torque wrench (inch-pounds capable)
  • Appropriate bit for coil mounting screw
  • Loctite threadlocker
  • Owner's manual (for main fuse location)

Step-by-Step Installation

Step 1 – Remove the Main Fuse

Before touching anything electrical, remove the main fuse per your owner's manual. This is a critical safety step — do not skip it.

Step 2 – Remove the OEM Coil Mounting Screw

Remove the original equipment coil mounting screw. Discard it — the new black screw included in the kit replaces it.

Step 3 – Check Coil Seating

Before installing the cover, verify the coil is sitting flush and not bound up in its mount. A coil that's cocked or shifted will prevent the cover from sitting correctly and can cause the screw to strip or the cover to crack under torque.

Step 4 – Install the Coil Cover

Slide the coil cover (2) over the coil, aligning it with the mounting hole.

Step 5 – Apply Loctite and Torque the Screw

Apply a small amount of Loctite threadlocker to the threads of the new black screw (1). Thread the screw in by hand first to confirm it's not cross-threaded, then torque to specification using your inch-pound torque wrench.

Torque spec: 5 inch-pounds

Do not guess and do not tighten by hand — 5 in-lbs is very light. Overtightening will crack the cover or strip the threads. Use a proper inch-pound torque wrench.

Step 6 – Reinstall the Main Fuse

Reinstall the main fuse per your owner's manual. Start the bike and confirm normal operation.

Tips for a Perfect Install

  • 5 in-lbs is lighter than you think — roughly the force of two fingers on a short screwdriver. Always use a torque wrench.
  • Loctite is required — without it, engine vibration will back the screw out over time.
  • Make sure the coil is fully seated before installing the cover — a flush coil means a flush cover.
  • Wipe down the coil and surrounding area before install for a clean finished look.
