How to Install a Harley-Davidson Derby Cover (Step-by-Step Guide)

A custom derby cover is one of the most visible engine upgrades you can make to your Harley-Davidson — and one of the easiest to install. The key is the torque sequence: too loose and it leaks, too tight and you crack the clear coat. Follow this guide and you'll nail it every time. Before You Begin

Verify all kit contents are present before starting. Screws may be reused from your OEM cover or replaced with the hardware included in your kit. If anything is missing or damaged, contact Brock Black Designs at 208-705-0028 or visit brockblackdesigns.com.

Tools Required

  • Safety glasses
  • Torx® screwdriver or bit set (T27 most common)
  • Torque wrench (inch-pounds capable)
  • Loctite 243 Medium Strength Threadlocker (Blue) — Part No. 99642-97
  • Service manual for your model year (for quad ring and gasket reference)

Critical Torque Warning

Do NOT exceed 35 in-lbs. Overtightening will crack the clear coat on your derby cover. Points covers do not need to be torqued — hand-tighten only.

Kit-Specific Notes

  • Kit Numbers 25700962, 25700963, 25700964: One longer screw goes into the 2 o'clock position.
  • Kit Numbers 25701063, 25701553: Bare Aluminum Wheel Protectant Wipes (Part No. 93600063) can be applied to “RideFree” text for added corrosion protection.
  • Points covers: Hand-tighten only — no torque wrench needed.

Step-by-Step Installation

Step 1 – Safety First

Put on your safety glasses. Turn the ignition to OFF and allow the engine to cool completely before starting. Park on a flat, stable surface with the kickstand extended.

Step 2 – Remove the OEM Derby Cover

Using your Torx® bit, remove the original equipment screws and washers. Set them aside — you may reuse them if your kit doesn't include replacement hardware.

Step 3 – Inspect the Gasket and Quad Ring

With the factory cover off:

  • Inspect the ring gasket — if it's heavily worn or cracked, replace it before installing the new cover.
  • Verify the quad ring is properly seated behind where the derby cover mounts. A misaligned quad ring will cause an oil leak.

Step 4 – Prepare the Screws

Whether reusing OEM screws or using new hardware from your kit:

  • If reusing OEM screws: clean the threads and chase the mounting holes to remove any old threadlocker or debris.
  • Apply Loctite 243 (Blue) to the screw threads before installation. This prevents vibration from backing the screws out over time.
  • Make sure the cover fits flush to the primary before tightening anything.

Step 5 – Install the New Derby Cover

Position the new Brock Black Designs derby cover over the primary. If your kit requires a longer screw at the 2 o'clock position (Kits 25700962, 25700963, 25700964), make sure that screw is in the correct location before threading anything in.

Install the washers and screws by hand — do not tighten yet.

Step 6 – Torque in a Star Pattern

This is the most important step. Tighten the screws in a star pattern (not in a circle) in four progressive stages:

  1. Stage 1: Finger-tighten all screws in a star pattern.
  2. Stage 2: Torque all screws to 10 in-lbs in a star pattern.
  3. Stage 3: Torque all screws to 20 in-lbs in a star pattern.
  4. Stage 4: Torque all screws to 35 in-lbs in a star pattern.

Stop at 35 in-lbs. Do not go further — exceeding this torque value will crack the clear coat on your cover.

Step 7 – Final Check

Confirm all screws are evenly torqued and the cover sits flush with no gaps. Wipe off any fingerprints with a clean microfiber cloth. Start the bike and let it reach operating temperature, then visually inspect around the derby cover for any signs of oil seepage. If you see any, shut the bike off and recheck the quad ring seating.

Points Cover Installation Note

If you're installing a points cover rather than a derby cover: hand-tighten only — no torque wrench needed. Points covers do not require the star-pattern torque sequence.

Tips for a Perfect Install

  • The star pattern is non-negotiable — tightening in a circle warps the cover and causes uneven sealing.
  • Loctite 243 (Blue) is the correct grade — don't substitute Red (permanent) or skip it entirely.
  • Check the quad ring every time you remove the derby cover — it's the most common source of primary oil leaks.
  • After your first long ride, do a quick visual check around the cover for any seepage.
